How it works.

You call or use the quote form and tell us about the job: the rooms or surfaces, the suburb, and roughly when you want it done. We pass the job to a local painting business that can price it. That business quotes you directly and is responsible for its own registration where it applies, insurance and workmanship. We don't charge you for the enquiry. Businesses we refer work to may pay us a referral fee.

• Name and ABN. The legal name and ABN on the quote should match the invoice and the payment account.
• Insurance. Ask for a current public liability certificate and read the insured name, expiry and activities, rather than accepting a logo in an email signature.
• Registration on bundled jobs. Consumer Affairs Victoria says a job involving only one trade, such as painting, can be exempt from registration requirements. If a contractor bundles plastering, carpentry, rendering and painting above $10,000, ask in writing whether BPC registration and major-contract requirements apply, and verify any registration in the official search.
• Deposit. Where the domestic building deposit rules apply, the maximum deposit is 10 per cent for a contract below $20,000 and 5 per cent for $20,000 or more.
• Access and lead. Two-storey work should name scaffold, a work platform or another defensible access system. On pre-1970 homes, ask for a lead-paint test before any sanding.
• A written quote. Get every repaint in writing, with the product warranty listed separately from the workmanship warranty.
